Dr. John W.

Palmour

Wolfspeed, Inc.

CTO

Dr. John Palmour co-founded Wolfspeed, formerly Cree, in 1987. Now, over 30 years later, the business has grown into a pure-play semiconductor powerhouse leading the industry transition from silicon to Silicon Carbide. Palmour has championed and innovated Silicon Carbide and GaN for power and RF applications, respectively, for over 30 years, enabling faster, more energy-efficient technologies that are foundational for many industries as they prepare and adapt for a more sustainable future. At the onset, he knew Wolfspeed had the opportunity to define the market with the blue LED and had the cutting-edge vision to transform power devices. As Chief Technology Officer of Wolfspeed’s high-potential Wolfspeed business, John focuses on pioneering breakthrough semiconductor technology for power and RF commercial applications, businesses central to Wolfspeed from the start, even before the company built its LED lighting empire. Embodying the risk-taking and relentless reinventing culture that Wolfspeed was founded upon, John has helped Wolfspeed transform the traditionally slow-moving and risk-averse power and RF industries with a no-such-thing-as impossible approach to innovation. Today, Wolfspeed’s business is rapidly growing, with a bright future ahead. John Palmour is responsible for 386 publications and 75 U.S. patents in the areas of processing and device designs for silicon carbide and gallium nitride electronic devices.

Driving Silicon Carbide into the Mainstream

As governments promote faster CO2 reduction to become carbon neutral within the next two to three decades, the transition from silicon to Silicon Carbide will only continue. The next generation in power semiconductors will be produced with Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology, as it provides superior performance to drive technologies of the future such as electric vehicles, renewable energy and power grids to fuel smart cities. Silicon Carbide’s efficiency, compared to silicon, reduces energy consumption, and therefore operating costs. This is better for businesses and the environment. To support the upcoming rise in demand for SiC power electronics, Wolfspeed is increasing our capacity in the U.S. with the expansion of our Materials factory in North Carolina and the opening of the world’s largest, and only, 200 mm SiC fabrication facility in Upstate New York. The addition of a power applications lab in Munich will enable us to better serve our EMEA customers. Wolfspeed is a key driver in the transformation of the power semiconductor industry, which has lasting positive effects for businesses, consumers, and the sustainability of our planet.
